study timer

Why study against a clock.

A fixed session changes the question from "how much should I do?" to "what can I get done before the alarm?", which is a much easier question to start. It also puts a break at the end that you have earned, and a clear stopping point, so the next session is not dreaded. Forty-five minutes is long enough to get into a topic and short enough to stay sharp to the end.

✦ What it is for

What people use a study timer for.

Revision sessions

One topic per session, with a past-paper question at the end to check it stuck.

Homework

A set time and a set place, and the phone in another room until the alarm.

Reading for a course

Forty-five minutes with the book and a notebook, not the whole evening with neither.

Pomodoro-style studying

Twenty-five on, five off, four times over. The 25-minute preset is here; the break timer handles the five.

✦ How to

How to use the study timer.

1

Pick a length

It starts at 45 minutes. The presets underneath switch to another length in one click, and the custom field takes any number of minutes.

2

Press start

The ring starts emptying and the tab title counts down, so you can see the time left from another tab.

3

Leave it running

Switch tabs, lock the phone, let the laptop sleep. It counts to a fixed end time, so it stays correct.

4

Get the alarm at zero

A chime repeats until you stop it, and a browser notification arrives if you allowed one. Reset to go again.

The whole term

A study session is easy. A term of them is the hard part.

EvyOS turns the sessions into a plan: each module as a project, the topics as tasks with dates, and revision as a routine you keep rather than a panic in the last fortnight. Install the student term plan and it is set up in one click.

Questions

The study timer, answered.

Long enough to get into the material, short enough to stay focused: twenty-five to fifty minutes suits most people, followed by a five to ten minute break. If you find yourself rereading the same paragraph, the session was too long; shorten the next one.
It can be. Set twenty-five minutes, study until the alarm, take five, and repeat. The full Pomodoro timer, which handles the breaks and counts rounds, is at evyos.com/pomodoro.
Yes. It keeps correct time in a background tab or on a locked phone, and the alarm sounds at zero. The tab title shows the time left, so you can glance at it without switching tabs.
Yes. No account, no ads, and nothing to install.

The timer is the easy part.
Doing it again tomorrow is not.

EvyOS holds the goals, projects, tasks, habits and skills the timer is in service of, and keeps the streak of the sessions you actually did.
