practice timer

Why time your practice.

Practice improves when it is focused and frequent. A timed session makes both easier: a clear length makes it easier to start on a busy day, and a single goal for the session (one passage, one technique) stops it drifting into playing things you already know. Thirty minutes of that is worth more than an hour of noodling.

✦ What it is for

What people use a practice timer for.

Daily instrument practice

Thirty minutes on one passage or one technique, not the whole repertoire.

Warm-ups and scales

Ten minutes before the real work, timed so it does not take over.

Children's practice

A visible countdown that ends the argument about how long is left.

Any skill

Drawing, languages, typing, chess: the same rule applies.

✦ How to

How to use the practice timer.

1

Pick a length

It starts at 30 minutes. The presets underneath switch to another length in one click, and the custom field takes any number of minutes.

2

Press start

The ring starts emptying and the tab title counts down, so you can see the time left from another tab.

3

Leave it running

Switch tabs, lock the phone, let the laptop sleep. It counts to a fixed end time, so it stays correct.

4

Get the alarm at zero

A chime repeats until you stop it, and a browser notification arrives if you allowed one. Reset to go again.

Every day

The practice you log is the practice you keep.

The learn-an-instrument plan builds daily practice short enough to happen, with a piece you can play by the end. In EvyOS every session can be logged against a skill, so the hours add up where you can see them.

Questions

The practice timer, answered.

Short and daily beats long and weekly. Twenty to thirty minutes of focused practice is a good daily target for most adult learners; ten is better than none on a busy day.
Yes. Set a length, work on one thing until the alarm, and use full screen to keep the time visible on a tablet on the music stand.
Not on this page, which stores nothing. In EvyOS you can log each session against a skill, in minutes, and see the total grow.
Yes. No account, no ads, and nothing to install.

The timer is the easy part.
Doing it again tomorrow is not.

EvyOS holds the goals, projects, tasks, habits and skills the timer is in service of, and keeps the streak of the sessions you actually did.
