meditation timer

Why a plain timer.

Much of meditation is not checking how long is left. A timer takes that job away: you set it, you stop thinking about time, and the chime tells you when it is over. Ten minutes a day is a common place to start. A short session that happens every day tends to do more than a long one that happens occasionally.

✦ What it is for

What people use a meditation timer for.

A daily sit

Ten minutes at the same time each day, most often first thing in the morning.

Breathing breaks

Two or five minutes of slow breathing between meetings.

Before sleep

A short session to end the day, away from the screen.

Longer practice

Twenty or thirty minutes once the shorter ones feel easy.

✦ How to

How to use the meditation timer.

1

Pick a length

It starts at 10 minutes. The presets underneath switch to another length in one click, and the custom field takes any number of minutes.

2

Press start

The ring starts emptying and the tab title counts down, so you can see the time left from another tab.

3

Leave it running

Switch tabs, lock the phone, let the laptop sleep. It counts to a fixed end time, so it stays correct.

4

Get the alarm at zero

A chime repeats until you stop it, and a browser notification arrives if you allowed one. Reset to go again.

Eight weeks

Turn up every day for eight weeks, and see.

The start-meditating plan is deliberately simple: ten minutes, the same time each day, for eight weeks, with no target beyond turning up. It installs in one click and tracks the streak for you.

Questions

The meditation timer, answered.

Start short. Five or ten minutes a day is enough to begin with, and it is easier to keep up than a longer session. Lengthen it when ten minutes feels easy.
Yes, one click. The session still ends on screen, and the tab title shows the time left if you want to glance at it.
No. This is a plain timer: you set the length, and a chime ends it. That suits people who already have a practice, or who find voices distracting.
Yes. No account, no ads, and nothing to install.
