HIIT timer

Why a timer makes HIIT work.

High-intensity intervals depend on the rest being short and the effort being hard. Without a timer, rests stretch and efforts shrink, and the session quietly becomes moderate. Tones at every change keep both honest, and a visible round count tells you how much is left, which is what gets you through the last three.

✦ What it is for

What people use a HIIT timer for.

A 10-minute session

Ten rounds of 40 on and 20 off: the default.

Group classes

Full screen on a TV so the whole room follows the same rounds.

Circuits at home

One exercise per round, rotating through five or six.

Sprint work

Short hard sprints with a walk-back rest.

✦ How to

How to use the HIIT timer.

1

Set work, rest and rounds

It starts at 40 seconds of work, 20 of rest and 10 rounds. Pick a preset or change any of the three underneath the timer.

2

Press start

A 10-second countdown gives you time to get into position, then the first round begins with a tone.

3

Follow the tones

A higher tone starts each work period and a lower one each rest, with ticks for the last three seconds. The round count shows how many are left.

4

Finish

A chime marks the end of the last round. Press go again to repeat the whole set.
