New knitters usually stall on a first project that is too big or a yarn that hides every stitch. This starts with medium needles and smooth, light-coloured yarn, learns to cast on, knit and purl on a practice square, and moves to a simple scarf or dishcloth before anything with shaping, a complicated pattern or several colours.

Log practice time. The practice square counts; it is where the stitches become automatic.

✦ It comes with a note

When it goes wrong

Count the stitches at the end of every row. Most beginner mistakes are an extra or dropped stitch at the edge.

A dropped stitch can be picked back up with a crochet hook. Undoing a few rows is a normal part of knitting, not a failure.

Questions

Learn to knit, answered.

A pair of medium needles, around 4.5 to 5.5mm, a ball of smooth, light-coloured medium-weight yarn, scissors and a blunt needle for weaving in the ends. Very thin or fluffy yarn makes the stitches hard to see.
Casting on, the knit stitch and casting off, then the purl stitch. Knitting every row makes garter stitch, and alternating knit and purl rows makes stocking stitch, which between them cover most beginner projects.
Something flat and rectangular: a dishcloth, a coaster or a simple scarf. It avoids shaping and complicated counting, and finishing it quickly is what keeps most new knitters going.
