Beginners give up on crochet at the first project, usually because it was a blanket. This starts with the right hook and a smooth, light-coloured yarn so the stitches are visible, practises the basic stitches on small swatches, and then makes a small real thing before anything with a pattern and a hundred rows.

✦ It comes with a note

Before the first pattern

Patterns are written in either US or UK terms, and the same name means different stitches: a US single crochet is a UK double crochet. Check which one a pattern uses before starting.

Count the stitches at the end of every row. Most beginner projects that go wrong gained or lost a stitch at the edge several rows back.

Questions

Learn to crochet, answered.

A medium hook, around 5mm, a ball of smooth, light-coloured medium-weight yarn, scissors and a blunt needle for weaving in the ends. Dark or fluffy yarn hides the stitches, which makes learning much harder.
The slip knot and chain, then single crochet and double crochet. Those cover most beginner patterns, and practising them in small swatches before starting a project makes the project far less frustrating.
Something flat, small and made of one stitch: a dishcloth, a coaster or a simple scarf. It should be finished within a week or two, because a finished small thing is what keeps people going.
