Care arrangements usually start in a crisis and then run on improvisation. This does the three things that are much easier before they are urgent: assess what is actually needed, get the legal and financial permissions in place, and treat the carer's own limits as part of the plan.

✦ It comes with a note

Permissions first

The authority to speak to a bank, a doctor or a landlord on somebody's behalf takes weeks to arrange and is close to impossible to sort once it is genuinely needed.\n\nThe carer's own limits are part of the plan rather than an afterthought. Arrangements that assume one person can absorb everything fail all at once.

Questions

Caring for a parent, answered.

The legal and financial permissions — the authority to speak to a bank, a doctor or a landlord on their behalf. They take weeks to arrange and are close to impossible to sort once they are genuinely needed.
Through a proper assessment rather than an impression, which is the first project here. Needs are usually a mix of practical, medical and social, and the practical ones are the easiest to overestimate from the outside.
Because carer burnout is the most common way an arrangement fails, and it fails suddenly. Treating your own limits as a planned part of the arrangement rather than an afterthought is what makes it last.
