Now do it back.

The pattern grows by one every round. Most people stop somewhere between seven and nine, and it moves a lot with how tired you are.

Why it works

It is measuring a span, not a score.

The number this gives you is how long a sequence you could hold, which is why the result leads with a level rather than points. It sits in the same territory as digit span, and for the same reason: working memory holds a handful of items and then stops.

Seven is the number everybody has heard. In practice most adults land between six and nine, and the honest finding is that the figure moves more with tiredness and distraction than it does between people.

Worth knowing

The pads are numbered on purpose.

Almost every version of this is four coloured squares and nothing else, which makes it unplayable for a meaningful share of people for no reason at all.

Here each pad carries a number as well as a colour and a flash, so the sequence can be followed as digits if colour is not doing the job. It costs one character per pad, and it means there is no separate accessible mode to bury in a settings panel.

✦ How to play

Three steps, and none of them is signing up.

1
Watch the pattern

It starts at one and grows by one every round you get right.

2
Repeat it

Tap the pads in the same order. One wrong pad ends the run.

Questions

Sequence memory, answered.

Six to nine is where most adults land. Above ten usually means you have started grouping the pads into chunks rather than remembering them one at a time, which is a real technique and not cheating.
Yes. Every pad is numbered as well as coloured, so the sequence can be read as digits. That is the default rather than a mode you have to find.
It is a rough approximation of memory span, which is a genuine and well-studied thing. It is not a clinical instrument, it controls for nothing, and a bad run means you were distracted. Compare your own runs rather than yourself against anybody else.
